From Volunteer-Led Beginnings to a New Community Space
The Evolution of the LWSWC Community Center
The Labrador West Status of Women’s Centre (LWSWC) has always been at the heart of community empowerment, offering support and advocacy for marginalized individuals in Labrador West. Established in 1980 as the Labrador West Women’s Resource and Information Centre, this marked the first time in Labrador West that physical space was dedicated for coming together, expanding resources, and helping women and the wider community. The organization has focused on addressing issues of oppression and inequality, with a primary goal of being a resource hub for women, gender-diverse individuals, and the general public.
The Volunteer-Led Beginnings
In its early days, the LWSWC faced a common challenge—limited funding. Despite this, the women behind the organization were unwavering in their commitment to its goals. Many of the early workers were volunteers, passionate about advocating for equality and social justice. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the community had access to resources and support, despite the financial challenges they faced. Their dedication laid the groundwork for the community center we know today.
A New Era: The Opening of the Community Center in 2022
After over 40 years of advocacy and service, the LWSWC saw a monumental step forward in 2022 with the opening of a new community center. This new space has allowed the organization to expand its reach and better serve the needs of the community. The new center is not just a space for the LWSWC, but for a variety of local community organizations to utilize as well. The Status of Women Council emphasized how crucial it is for groups to have accessible, inclusive, and free spaces in which they can meet and work toward positive change.
Raising Funds for the Community Center
The opening of this new space was made possible through the combined efforts of the LWSWC, the community, and local businesses. The Status of Women Council raised a remarkable $65,000 through community donations and partnerships. Notably, a generous $25,000 grant from Rio Tinto and approximately $38,000 from the Ulnooweg Indigenous Communities Foundation covered two years of rent for the space. The Foundation also has a small office within the building, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of the new space.
This community-driven fundraising effort highlights just how deeply the people of Labrador West believe in the importance of accessible, inclusive spaces for all. It also represents the center’s ability to adapt and meet the changing needs of the community over the years.
Looking to the Future
The opening of the new community center marks an exciting chapter in the ongoing story of the LWSWC. As we continue to serve and support individuals in Labrador West, the center stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. It’s a space where people can come together to learn, share, and advocate for the social change that we all deserve.
Whether you’re attending one of our workshops, meeting with a community group, or accessing resources, the LWSWC’s new home is here to provide a welcoming environment for everyone. We’re excited for the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to continuing our work in this inclusive, supportive space.
