What is Peer Support?

Introducing LWSWC’s new Gender-Based Violence Peer Support Worker, Melissa

Hi there! My name is Melissa and I’m the new Peer Support Worker for the Labrador West Status of Women.

I am excited to be in this role of peer support because I want to make a difference in our community. I've always been someone who people open up to about their struggles, I have never been one to shy away from the hard conversations. Helping others overcome their struggles has always been near and dear to my heart - now I get to implement that on a professional level. Being able to point women in the right direction to supports available to them, lend a listening ear, and help you talk through your thoughts.

One in five women have been touched by gender based violence and I am 1 in 5. I am here for you!

What is Peer Support?

You’re probably wondering “what is peer support?” Well, a peer support worker provides emotional and social support to others who have similar lived experiences or challenges. The purpose of peer support is to join forces - without judgement and as equals - to provide support and learn skills. Peer support offers a range of different supportive services. Check out the infographic below!

Peer support is more than just a helpful resource—it’s a transformative force that can uplift individuals, strengthen communities, and foster a sense of belonging. By providing shared experiences, emotional validation, encouragement, and a safe space to grow, peer support bridges gaps in understanding and creates connections that are both meaningful and healing. Whether it’s offering advice, sharing struggles, or simply being present for one another, peer support empowers individuals to not only overcome their challenges but thrive in the process.

At its core, peer support is about empathy, trust, and the understanding that we don’t have to face life’s difficulties alone. It’s a reminder that the power of human connection can spark change, inspire growth, and provide a deeper sense of purpose.

At LWSWC, my role is to provide support to women and gender diverse people experiencing Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

What is Gender-Based Violence?

Gender-based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender, often disproportionately affecting women, girls, and gender minorities. It includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse that is rooted in power imbalances, gender norms, and societal expectations. Violence is something that has touched all of lives in some form or another, whether it be at home, school, or work.

As someone who has been personally impacted by gender-based violence, I am here to support you in whatever way you need. Living in a rural community like Labrador West can bring unique challenges for those seeking support including isolation, economic dependency, social stigma, and limited access to services. It is my hope that it becomes easier for individuals to find the support and resources they need to heal and thrive. I hope that by raising awareness and providing compassionate care, we can break down the barriers of isolation and stigma. No one should have to face such challenges alone, and I’m committed to ensuring that those affected by gender-based violence have the tools, community, and safety they deserve.

As I continue this work, I am reminded, every single day, of the importance of peer support: not as an expert, but as a fellow human, a listener, and a companion. Because, in the end, it’s the human connection that makes all the difference.
